Los Tercios Waterfall-Cascada Los Tercios
A waterfall in the rainy season A unique basalt columnar
A ten-minute drive by car to the well-known waterfall Los Tercios, best visited in the early morning or late afternoon. Join Roberto El Gringo or one of our other bilingual or Spanish speaking local guides, for the drive and or walk to the base of this unusual basalt columnar rock formation beautiful in the rainy season but equally impressive without water in the dry season. I do like to mention that this a waterfall/Rock formation to see and does not offer even in the rainy season a pool to swim or jump into.
In 2021 the owners of the property with access to the falls had a visit from family in the U.S.. With a new selfie swing, Facebook and Instagram pages Los Tercios is much more popular than it has been in the past. Thursday through Sundays the owners now offer many new things like snacks, coffee, sodas and more as well as several chairs, swings and hammocks, latrines and garbage cans all located in two panoramic viewpoints. All this for an entrance fee of $0.50/person and $1.00/vehicle.
Not considering myself the best businessman I have for years indicated to 100s of travelers that a guide is really not need to visit Los Tercios. We generally include it for free as part of our Suchitoto and Cinquera tours. If not wanting to walk the mile you can now hire a tuktuk or small taxi for a few dollars. For $5 I believe they will take you there, wait for you and bring you back to Suchitoto. All that said we do offer tours to Los Tercios for those who don’t want to walk or take a taxi or for those who enjoy a bilingual guide while exploring.
We will pick you up anywhere in Suchitoto, drive you to Los Tercios, pay entrance fees and arrange for a local guide to show you the way and help if needed on the short but technical path down and back up. You will have all the time you want to visit the two lookouts or just rest in a hammock or chair and enjoy the lake and mountain views.
The tour to Los Tercios last from 30 to 90 minutes. Tour is available for groups of 1 to 10 persons, and costs only $15.00/person with a minimum group of 3(Minimum cost of $45), we do offer discounts for groups of 5 or more. We can occasionally arrange with local guides for a minimum of $15 this for 1-3 people then $5/person if more, it is necessary to let us know the day before you want to go and then we can arrange for the guide to meet you at the Ministerio de Turismo/MiTur office at 9:00am
FYI a visit to Los Tercios can many times be arranged free of charge by speaking to the tourist police. The police normally will make one trip a day generally around 3 pm. If you are happy with how our local police feel free to invite them to a soda or ice cream once back in town. But beware it is very common that they will not be able to accompany travelers.
