Cinquera-Civil War and Eco Tour
One of our more popular tours for those staying in Suchitoto!
The neighboring town of Cinquera with its dry-tropical eco forest makes a good option to combine the history of the recent civil war and nature while at the same time supporting a communal eco-tourism program that benefits many in the area.
Our tour includes the park entrance fees, cost a local park guide, bottled water, transportation from Suchitoto to Cinquera, a short tour of the plaza and church in Cinquera and the small museum (only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays). Although we do not include the cost of lunch it is common to take a break and get some food before heading back to Suchitoto.
The tour requires an average to moderate-advanced effort for the 2-3 hour hike in the forest reserve area. For those in good shape the local guide will take you up to the lookout tower which offers nice views of the surround area.
Unless people are time limited we almost always include a free stop at the famous Los Tercios, a nice waterfall during the raining season and always interesting bassalt columnar formation in the dry season. The stop also offers one of the best views of the Cerron Grande Reservior.
This tour is only offered in the morning and don’t forget to bring your swim suit because inside the forest there is a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole, the swim is best after the hike up to the lookout.
Different from the other group tours which deopart Suchitoto at 7:00 or 7:30 am we pick up at your hotel or hostal at 8:30 am allowing you to enjoy your breakfast before heading out. We also spend our time a bit more relaxed and on most days return to Suchitoto between 2:30 and 3:00 pm.
With an 8:30 am pick up we arrive in Cinquera 18 kms from Suchitoto just after 9:00 am. The group is met by one of our friends and ex FMLN combatants who will with the help of our bilingual guide condense some 40 years into around of 45 minutes. After hearing about from our friend you will have time to ask questions. Afterwards you will do the hike in the forest which include 5 stations with some further information about the conflick and things implemented in the mountainous terrain. After coming back down and finding a nice waterfall and swimming area you will if desires have time to take a dip before we returnto our vehicle and head into the center of Cinquera. There our guide will ask to see if people want to get a bite to eat, mentioning that there are few options and all are very local/rustic, safe and inexpensive. The tour continues with the explaination of several murals, guns, the tail of a downed helicopter and if open the small war museum. On the drive back to Suchitoto some 35 to 40 minutes we will stop at Los Tercios. Afterwards our guide will ask where you want to be dropped off and offer some restaurant options in Suchitoto for those who are hungry.
