Birding in and around the Cerro Verde Volcano Park
The Cerro Verde volcano park offers a wonderful area for the avid birder. This is one of two volcanos in El Salvador that one can reach in any vehicle being able to drive to the main parking lot which is only a few hundred feet from the rim of the extint crater.
Gringo Tours works with several local park guides and birding most days is wonderful even with the many visitors to the park. The Emerald Tucanet, Blue and white Mockingbird, Green-throated Mountain Gem, Ivory-billled Woodcreeper and Cinimon-bellied Flowerpiercer are just a few of the species common in the park. We generally include the area known as San Blas, a valley between the Cerrro Verde and Santa Ana Volcanoes in the early morning meeting our local guide at El Tibet where we can saftley park the vehicle. Here we would have a short coffe/tea break to hold us over until lunch. We spend the morning explorieg 2-3 trails and raods in the area before breaking for lunch. For lunch we drive up to the actual Cerrro Verde park where there are several options from inexpensive and local to a very nice hotel and bistro.
After our break for lunch we would continue the afternoon exploring the trrails in the park where higher altitude species can be found.
